Something In The Water is rockumentary about the explosion of the WA Music scene featuring interviews with all of Perth's best musos and directed by Aidan O'Bryan. FL has a snippet of the doco that is screening on ABC 2 tonight at 9:30pm.

That was released over a year ago now? I remember going to the opening... Abbe May and the Rockin Pnuemonia played, among others.

Not a bad doco'. Could have been better.

I think they focused on the wrong bands. I've lived in NSW, VIC and Perth and spent lots of time in Brisbane (as the folks lived there for a while) and although there's fuck all decent venues in Perth, there is some extraordinary talent. I simply believe this is because there is fuck all else to do.

You don't necessarily have to like the bands (lord knows Ben hates more than half of the current crop of Australian bands), but you can still credit them with their success.

yeah, I getcha. i guess they seemed to spend a lot of time with the gyroscopes and end of fashions, and only mentioned the bands i prefer in passing. selfish of them really!

I think you're right though - there is some truth to this documentary, a fair few successful acts have emerged from somewhere relatively small and not known for it's 'entertainment industry'. I think there was enough of an idea to make this doco', but they didn't really address the question all that well.

More like doesn't rate than hates, sure a few of the bands have a certain amount of success in Australia but I really don't see it as an achievement of note. Definitely not worthy of a wank doco.

Maybe. Yeah, probably. I missed it last night, so I'd need to watch it again to answer you specifically. I guess I remember thinking when I was last in Melbourne that the gigs I was going to were pretty substandard and everyone seemed to think they were awesome. It made me realise we actually had a pretty good music scene. They should have focussed on that more and the bands involved.

You are right Baz Luhrman's Australia was a great achievement and Powderfinger is the greatest aussie band of the last decade.
