The soul and jazz influences of the opening two songs of Music Is My Saviour are a little tired. It’s not until the third song, This Is Why I’m Hot , that MIMS sounds fresh. It’s easy to see why this track went to number 1 in the US. It truly is a magnificent song with a cool and refreshing feel. It’s like the hip hop version of a summer breeze.
The cool out continues for a while until track 6. Cop Out uses a delicious female vocal amongst some tinny strings and effects over a slamming beat.
Minimalism seems to be par for the course on this release. Harder sounds such as those used on ‘ They Don’t Wanna Play with Bun B and Seed are not overly successful. Like This could definitely be picked up as a single with its baby doll chorus and low riding sound. J _Just Like That _ is MIMS hard at his best, while *Letoya Luckett * is only part of the reason ‘Without You’ sounds like it was released in the early 90’s.
Superman is an interesting banjo’d bang up which leads us in to a pile of remix’s, outro’s and bonus tracks. The Blackout mix of the single is the best R & B song you’ll hear this year and tear jerker Don’t Cry is a simplistic rap over a soft piano which will be a favourite for fans. Next up, the chipmunk sounds of I Did You Wrong are a bit of a throwback to our very own Avalanches. Taking us out is a rock version of the single emerges as the best song on the album.OK so we have 3 versions of the single. Truth is the remixes have more artistic merit than the other songs combines. The rest of the album is good, but I can’t stop flicking between versions of the song that melted US playlists. If only for ‘ This Is Why I’m Hot , Check it out or check out.
