Kisschasy - OpinionsWon't Keep You Warm AtNight

After a pretty successful album in 2005’s United Paper People, Kisschasy are back with Opinions Won’t Keep You Warm At Night. It’s the first single of their forthcoming full length, and I’m sure by now you’ve seen their film clip (parodying the relationship between the Western power trio of Bush, Blair and Howard).

Having a closer listen, it’s kind of hard to see what exactly the film clip has to do with the song, the lyrical material sounding more like an ironic and subtle stab at their detractors with lines such as “you must have a lot of spare time/to put down the words you write/but no one cares” and “I will never let the bitter things you say ever get to me.” Sounds to me like a few bitter words have, indeed, gotten to them.

Like – œem or loathe – œem, there’s no denying that this Mornington Peninsula quartet are a talented bunch of lads who have penned some exceptionally catchy pop rock songs; these guys are deserving of every opportunity afforded to them. With that, it seems a little lazy to back up with cover songs for b-sides; this release in particular (there are 4 versions of the single) pays homage to legendary Aussie acts You Am I ( Berlin Chair ) and Regurgitator ( Blubber Boy ).

It’s always interesting to hear new takes on popular songs, although this is something Kisschasy haven’t tried too hard to do, both songs remaining fairly faithful to the originals (with the exception of singer Darren Cordeux’s gap-toothed lisp, and the obvious exclusion of electronic sounds in Blubber Boy).

A fun little listen, if only to hear the b-sides, but truth be told you’re probably better off waiting for the album.
