Ultra Payloaded, Perry Farrell’s first project with his new band Satellite Party is way different than what people have been used to with Jane’s Addiction. It is an upfront album that right away tells its theme and intentions: let’s have some, although random, fun.
While some tracks are high-quality and others like Milky Ave are lacking some excitement, the album is entertaining at most. You’ll be feeling like you’re having just a good time but will likely not be the best thing you’ve heard, particularly from Farrel. Tracks like Wishing upon a Dogstar and Only Love, Let’s Celebrate are fun tracks and open up the CD nicely. “The Solutionists” which is a new version of Ferrell’s previous collaboration with the engaging Thievery Corporation brings a more toned down yet surrealist mood than the previous upbeat tracks.
Awesome a song Farrell composed to his newborn child is backed by an orchestra and is his most personal and expressive track. Insanity Rains the album’s best track, reminds you of the energy and action of Jane’s Addiction. The album closes with Woman in the Window a track that features chorus vocals from an unreleased Jim Morrison song is welcome to please some of Morrison’s fans.
With all the guests and all the surprises, the eleven tracks will keep you attached to Farrell’s reality for at least an hour. And with all the electro-pop, rock and orchestra filled ballads you’ll see that Farrell’s decent effort will at least make you have a good time.
