Further - Our Own WorstEnemy
Fri 13th Feb, 2004 in Music Reviews
A collection of ‘previously unreleased, demo and live material’ the sticker on the cover proudly boasts. I’ve always been slightly indifferent to this band, seeing them live has made me happy but recorded they miss something.
Further’s sound is sort of mid 90’s Sydney indie rock mixed with more upbeat punk rock stuff. Fuzzy guitars meld into harder hitting guitars. Vocals go from soft melodic singing to yelling/screaming in the course of one breath. It is kind of like emo but with all the crap taken out, emo how it should be played and not how it is played. I do enjoy this record but I can’t see it being a standard on my player, one of records to whip out when I’m in the mood.
However, I do recommend getting this EP or their album ‘Punk Rock Vampires’. Standout tracks have to be ‘Yesterday’s Enemy’ and ‘Wouldn’t You Hate Being A Horse What With All The Fuckin’ Flies In Your Eyes’, plus live Quicktime videos always float my boat.
Further are very good at what they do and I’m surprised they haven’t gone, excuse the pun, further than they have. I guess that is just indicative of the music scene we have in this country.
