Supergrass - Kiss Of Life

They’re the scourge of music elitists the world over. The extra songs which get added to Best Of albums have long been the source of much debate. “Theyre just there so that completists have to buy the albums.” “The record companies make the bands do it for money.” “How can they put it on a Best Of if no-one’s ever heard the song before?” What all these arguments fail to take into account is whether or not the song is any good, and with Supergrass’s greatest hits album (entitled Supergrass Is 10) just around the corner, that should be all that matters.

The new song, Kiss Of Life, is not your standard Supergrass fare. A latin drum rhythm opens proceedings, and gets the feet tapping, before a funky guitar line, laid over some excellent keyboard and bass work, take hold of the whole body. The vocal stylings are that not-quite-cockney, not-quite-not-cockney we’ve come to expect and love from the boys, with an almost haunting moaning in the back ground.

The lyrics are standard Supergrass, words of love lost, found and cherished, “You count stars in green and blue, have dreams of things you knew, it’s too late, can’t you see, your sweet love’s got a hold on me.” With the release of this new single and album in July, there are strong rumours that the boys could be visiting Australia’s fair shores once more, and with an suitcase packed with songs of this quality, they will always be welcome.
