My Disco - PerfectProtection (Single)
Wed 13th Sep, 2006 in Music Reviews
‘Perfect Protection’ by Melbourne trio My Disco is the first offering off their soon to be released debut album Cancer. This first single is characteristic of a My Disco live set, distinctive and concise, as is the album that is set to feature eight songs in just less than twenty-five minutes. ‘Perfect Protection’ features My Disco’s distinguishing focus on rhythm and structure.
Opening with the restless, repetitive guitars sounds and joined by somewhat mechanical and fundamental drumming, these two continue in a rather cyclical fashion until the introduction of the vocals at two minutes and seventeen seconds into the track. Surprisingly, the repeated tune does not become tiresome or tedious but rather with pauses in the drumming and the minor alterations in the guitar’s pattern, the listener is captivated and queries when and if there will be any major changes. One is caught unaware when the vocals are inserted however it is not too surprising as they too are brief (twenty seconds duration) and terse. They are not sung, nor are they ostentatious or intricate, but instead frank and demanding ‘Offer me the perfect protection’. The most important lyric that possibly reflects the band’s intention in their stark instrumentation is ‘Offer me restraint to emotion’. The minimalist approach to this song results in a forceful, hypnotic, enjoyable track.
