Errol J.M. - Zeros andOnes
Wed 7th Jun, 2006 in Music Reviews
Zeros and Ones is an impressive 5-track debut single/EP, from Errol J.M., a band promising to be a much welcomed addition to Australia’s evolving indie-rock scene. The quartet, hailing from Newcastle NSW, is fronted by Errol Moyle, whose previous band ‘Muzzy Pep’ stirred airwaves after winning Triple J’s 1998 “Unearthed” competition.
The title track ‘Zeros and Ones’, with catchy chorus and enjoyable melodies, is a great debut single that demonstrates Errol Moyle’s undeniable talent as a singer/songwriter, with a unique ability to successfully blend a groovy folk/rock number with into one tight, catchy package. Moyle, occupying vocal, guitar and songwriting duties, has an immediately attractive voice; that is perfectly suited to the humorous and sophisticated lyrics – which, being a tad tongue-in-cheek at times, combine to form a widely appealing sound.
The other four B-sides provide an insightful glimpse into Errol J.M.’s creative range and diversity. ‘Pieces to Quiet’ and ‘Fighting for Air’ take the focus away from groovy indie-rock, and establish a real intimacy with Errol through his sophisticated lyrics, and solo folk-like guitar performance. The variety in these tracks, as well as ‘Reservations toward belief’ show that Errol J.M. have no intention of conforming to any one generic sound, and are ready to push the boundaries between genres to pursue their individual creative desires.
Zeros and Ones provides an appealing insight into the creative achievements of Errol JM, as well as building a strong sense of anticipation for their debut album: The Truth is Boring, which has been tagged with a late 2006 release date
