Hoodoo Gurus - When YouGet To California

When You Get To California is the second single to be released from the Hoodoo Gurus’ latest album, Mach Schau.

It sees the Gurus hitting the classic music style that they have made their own, however while this style has been successful for the guys in the past, When You Get To California does not seem to cater for those of us living in eras beyond the 80’s.

In this sense the song is rather disappointing. Every time I play the track I am left with the tune to What’s My Scene in my head, which most of you would know as a classic song from the Gurus in the 80’s. What’s My Scene was a great song and still is, but it is also suited to the era it was released in and has lived on because of that.

On the other hand When You Get To California seems to have been released by the guys almost 20 years too late.

Not intending to sound too harsh on the song, it does need to be said that When You Get To California is still a quality single with great sounding vocals from Dave Faulkner, but I just get the feeling that the guys are capable of so much more.
