NOFX - Wolves in WolvesClothing
Tue 9th May, 2006 in Music Reviews
To start with, let’s make one thing clear, NOFX are not here to amuse you – or so it says in the first line of their latest effort.
Doing what punk does best; rebelling against authority that is, NOFX take this new record into a domain that lyrically has been saturated over the past couple of years – Bush-bashing. But Wolves in Wolves Clothing takes a different approach by attacking the people that gave the administration power.
‘We March to the Beat of Indifferent Drum’ is a fantastic example of this. With lyrics: /With our ass in the air and our heads in the ground / There’s no sense of despair / without sight without sound/, attacking the ‘indifference’ of their fellow Americans by describing their reaction to the things going on around them. If they ignore the world crisis that is exploding in their faces – it will disappear. Quite nationalistic in the opposite end of the word’s spectrum.
‘Seeing Double at The Triple Rock’ sets a different scene – one we are more familiar with when reflecting on previous NOFX albums – a tribute to beer and the many, many side effects of drinking copious amounts of the beloved liquid.
The album is full of many different punk songs that you have come to love and expect from these if not lovable then definitely laughably hilarious guys.
Reading through their short and precise Bio – written by Fat Mike himself – they were yet another band that started out not able to play their instruments at all. Lucky for us, this inability has been nipped in the bud and they play better now than they ever have. Stubborn in their refusal of signing with major record labels NOFX have been more successful than any other independently signed band – selling record amount of albums and turning down more offers than any other band before them.
The record speaks to the indie youth of today but letting them know that, yes politics and crumby leadership IS an important factor in our lives and, yes – we should vote for others rights’ to express themselves, BUT they have kept us amused (even though they claim not to be here for that) with their hilarious lyrics.
Lets support their defiance by going to our local record store and buy a piece of the independent music scene’s royalty.
