Fourth Floor Collapse -Drink 'Til You Drown
Mon 6th Feb, 2006 in Music Reviews
Drink ‘Til You Drown is the first single off Fourth Floor Collapse’s forthcoming album Books With Broken Spines.
The gentle, melancholy music of Drink ‘Til You Drown’s intro soon makes way for the sombre, effective vocals of Michael Miller. The verse slowly draws you in until further reward is received thanks to the chorus’ layered vocals. This track from the Perth trio is definitely beguiling and the slight yodelish (just listen to the track, okay?) quality of the vocals drags you under and keeps you captivated.
The b-sides on this release are Cold Ambition (hooray for songs with mandolin!) and Street Full of Car Alarms. The pretty, wafting music of Cold Ambition belies a dark quality to the song, and the drifting backing vocals lend an almost eerie air to the proceedings. Both this track and the title track have a haunting bent that inexplicably makes you feel morose, but this is an oddly attractive quality. Go figure.
Street Full of Car Alarms lacks the captivating element of the previous songs, but harmonica lends the track a country tinge that still makes it more than listenable.
This single definitely has the capacity to intrigue, but more importantly, to leave you wanting more.
