Ben Lee - Into The Dark
Wed 2nd Nov, 2005 in Music Reviews
Since his ARIA wins just last month, Ben Lee’s releases from his album Awake Is The New Sleep have been played non-stop on every radio station. And new single Into The Dark has been getting more airplay and attention since Ben was brought to our attention once again with his new album.
Into The Dark is the third release from Ben’s album Awake is the New Sleep, which has won critical acclaim across the country. Yet another upbeat and catchy tune, like previous releases Gamble Everything for Love and Catch My Disease, this song will stay with you whether you want it to or not. It has the same appealing beat and lyrics with Ben’s distinctive vocals and guitar, and is on the topic of love and how he ‘has to find a way to your heart’.
Other tracks on this single include Hard Drive, another repetitive yet catchy tune, and Naked, from the movie The Rage in Placid Lake. And for those of you who have Ben’s latest album, this single also has a demo version of Apple Candy, which really is exactly the same as the album version expect it’s just Ben playing with a guitar, an acoustic version.
And the last track on this single is a cover of David Byrnes’ song Life During Wartime which Ben sings and plays with Gomez’s Ian Ball. They actually do this duet quiet well and play this song with the passion it deserves. Their vocals mix well and make this one of the highlights on this release. And last but not least, also included on this single is the video to the ever popular and infectious Catch My Disease.
This release would only appeal to people who like or only sort of like Ben Lee. If you’re not a fan, you won’t like and appreciate the music for what it is. Every song on this single is reminiscent of his albums, so if you already know that you don’t like his style, don’t bother with this release. But for those of you who, like myself, either like or love Ben, then this is definitely one to make sure you pick up next time you’re at your local music store.
