Grinspoon
They are now going to release a ‘best of’ album titled Best in Show (out in early November), and the Grinners have released a new single in hope that it will boost sales. Personally, I think the track listing on this album will sell on its own but it always helps to have a current song to keep your name and sound afresh in the listeners mind.
Their latest single is Sweet As Sugar and is reminiscent of their last album with that pop/rock sound. This isn’t a slow song and is full of that constant bass guitar strum and hammering drums that we have all come to associate with Grinspoon, and is without those screaming vocals from Phil Jamieson but still maintains a strong and steady performance. Some people aren’t fans of the ‘new’ Grinspoon, the more pop sounding Grinspoon that is, so if you find yourself in this category you might not like this new track. Nevertheless, it’s one of those infectious songs that stays in your head after you hear it where you will find yourself constantly singing the chorus.
While listening to this song, I’ve tried to decipher what it’s about and have come up with this theory. The lyrics imply that the person they’re singing about has dramatically changed and has become ‘someone else’. This is gathered from the lyrics:
I was unaware
Of what kind of person
Would still be standing
With a kiss, a lie
Or something to that matter. But on the other hand, they can’t stand to leave this person because they have fallen so hard they wouldn’t know what to do without them:
Are you feeling dead
Cos I’m feeling blinded
When we’re together
I feel alive
(Chorus) And I keep looking for you
Don’t know what else I should do
And I keep looking for you
Don’t know what else I should do
And I keep looking for you
Sweet as sugar
Sweet as Sugar will achieve Grinspoon’s objective to have a current hit that will help boost sales of Best In Show. However I feel it will be one of those songs that won’t stick around for long when promotional airplay has finished.
