Alex Lloyd - The Wonder
Fri 21st Oct, 2005 in Music Reviews
If Alex Lloyd’s previous single, Never Meant to Fail, didn’t convince you of his progression into pop kingdom, this should do it. The Wonder is Lloyd’s second release off his new self-titled album, and it’s going to be that track that everyone in the media uses as bad puns in article titles. (see above)
The track is a well crafted little pop tune that’ll have you humming Hear the wonder of it all in your head long after you’ve heard it. Lloyd’s in fine form and you can hear the passion in his voice as he dishes out lines such as
Innocence wasn’t meant to fail
Stretched it out on a bed of nails
All your rights and all your wrongs
What it meant now to belong.
The bridge just makes this song even sweeter. It’s like a quiet, intimate moment building up with anticipation. There’s a gentle smoothness in Lloyd’s voice as he goes
Did you see the wonder
Like a crash of thunder
It’s the spell we’re under now
which contrasts well with the energy of the rest of the song. But that’s what bridges are about right? (The musical kind anyway.)
In the end, there’s just something about the non-threatening guitar riffs, safe drum beats and your typical pop verse-chorus format that, while still making this a well crafted pop song, just doesn’t seem as exciting and mysterious as the long-gone Lloyd of Black the Sun era.
