Of Monsters And Men - MyHead Is An Animal

Image For Of Monsters And Men - My Head Is An Animal

What is it about Icelandic bands that makes them sound so Icelandic? Groups that hail from this area seem to have a penchant for sounds of grandiose proportions, even when writing relatively gentle music. This is a perfect way to describe the debut album from Of Monsters And Men, a six piece indie rock band from Iceland who are making a strong first impression with My Head Is An Animal.

The group have a few strengths under their belt which will play to their advantage, the main one being the joint harmonizing vocals of Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson. The two sing most of the record in tandem, sometimes breaking off individually for extra colour and dynamics. When this is coupled with their other main strengths, the melodies and the atmospheric feel of the music, My Head Is An Animal becomes an indie rock lover’s wet dream. The elements come together brilliantly in the record’s stand out tracks, opener Dirty Paws, and the rolling Slow And Steady, two songs which really sum up what this group are capable of.

From Finner is the strongest single vocal track, taking cues from Florence & The Machine and using shimmering walls of sound. The precise planning that have gone into the various layers of this music must have been fairly meticulous to come out with such a cohesive result, which is why the recording of this record is yet another strength.

The album moves from bright moments such as the horn laden Little Talks to the sombre yet beautiful Sloom covering a range of emotions without ever really committing to them. The record ends on the frenzied Lakehouse which builds then drops wonderfully into Yellow Light, a soft ballad that once again emphasises the amazing vocal work.

Of Monsters And Men have clearly taken their time with this release, not only in the song-writing, but in it’s actual creation. Whilst this may not be a luxury they can afford on album number two, which will test their true talents, My Head Is An Animal makes it pretty clear that they are well equipped for the challenge.

The corner is a shite hole, would like to see supports without the talking overpowering the bands.

Of Monsters & men managed to be one of the small to medium sized gigs of the year for me despite a great year so far. Fantastic live band & despite a few technical issues the crowd reaction at the end was one of the better reactions Iv seen at the corner

There was also a suprisingly large number of blonde bearded gents, must be the skandinavian fans. I'm hoping you were the drummer, I felt like a knob asking everyone if they were old Greg though.

everyone is so quick to defend it, but no one has told me why they love it yet. or why is should be picked over the forum or the hifi, especially for gigs like last night. like I'm actually getting mass sand in my vagina over this. don't just fucking disagree, give a reason. it's a venue that has obstructed views, is far too packed in to be comfortable anywhere, and I'm pretty sure it's slanted too. there's nothing really wrong with the sound or acoustics, but as a punter I can't say I've ever enjoyed a gig at the corner and have certainly missed shows just because they've been there.

The drummer was awesome so good work greg. You are right that the hifi & the forum are both better though the corner is a short walk from my house so I won't complain

Sure, if I want to go to a fucking romantic venue and hold my fucking sweet heart’s hand I would choose the fucking Forum. I’ve seen plenty of great fucking shows there, and it without a doubt is the most beautiful venue in town. I don’t get why you mention the Forum in comparison to the Corner when it has a much larger capacity. Have you ever been to quarter full show at the Forum? It’s a fucking terrible feeling, the space can be too big. It needs to fucking sell out to get some fucking atmosphere. The Corner quarter full? Fucking fantastic. There is no venue in Melbourne like the Corner for stinking several stubbies of Melbourne Bitter. Try getting a fucking beer at the fucking Hifi! Fuck that. You talk about obstructed views like the Corner is the fucking Prince Bandroom. Get a fucking grip. The fucking Northcote is the worst venue for crowd noise, even the headlining act can be drowned out. I’m not even going to get into the Corner’s roof top outdoor space and how awesome it is. Everything comes down to atmosphere and the Corner has tonnes of it.

oldgregg

oldgregg said on the 21st Jul, 2012

have never been to northcote. but prince is a shit hole.

the availability of beer should never influence how much you enjoy a gig.

no ones disputing that rooftop bar isn't nice, great food too.

of monsters and men could have filled the hi-fi and not sure about the forum, but I don't see why not.

your response had too much swearing in it.

How much you enjoy a gig? I think it does have an influence. How good the band is/was however...no, let the band/sound/crowd etc do the talking/listening.

You weren't very particular when you said "Corner sucks dick", I just assumed you were talking about the venue as a whole. I'm so sorry. Excuse me.

really, if you need a drink to enjoy live music, or life in any aspect, you're doing it wrong.

my opinion of course.

To be honest, while drinking at a gig is not at all vital to enjoying a gig, I think ease and availability of alcohol are a factor to consider when comparing what venues you enjoy more.

I agree. I never said I do.

Whingeing about bitchy little shit, like writing off the Corner as a whole because its 'slanted', is weak as piss. Life doesn't owe you any favours. Just keep complaining about how the biscuits are too hard and make your teeth hurt and see how far you get in life.

I might dislike certain aspects of some venues around Melbourne, like the crowd noise of the Northcote, but I still love the place. Life is too short.

you're being unnecessarily aggressive. bottom line is you can't see very well at the corner if you're not tall or in an optimum spot, I find it annoying and would rather be elsewhere. deal with it.
