The Joe Kings - LoveStrikes

Been awhile since I heard anyone sing with the passion and style of Steve Marriott but The Joe Kings lead singer Jack Stirling certainly has the sound on their EP Love Strikes. This tight combo from W.A. recorded this collection of songs in a few days at Birdland in Melbourne and it is worth wrapping your ears around. WAMI Award winners in 2010 and featured on triple J Unearthed, these young men are filling a rocking/blues void in Australia.Leave My Mind Behind bursts out of the gates with a swagger that is destined to get you up and moving in a live setting as the guitarist Phill Leggett cuts loose and cuts back throughout the track. Got A Letter For You is archetypal rock and roll southern soul/boogie that would stand along any Black Crowes record.
Jack and Phill may have serendipitously met a few years ago but the addition of Riley Watson on bass and Ryan Brewer on drums has defined the sound of this band. The music is not overpowering throughout and the warm feelings of I Left My Home Too Young prove that. Closing out this very tight EP is a rock and roll number Love Strikes, turn it up loud. With a couple of EP’s under their rock and roll sombreros and an upcoming LP we have some electricity that needs to be let loose. The Joe Kings are not a joke at all.
