Rhubarb - Start Again
Tue 27th Sep, 2005 in Music Reviews
Rhubarb have been kicking around for a few years now, since their break through track Exerciser was discovered by Triple J. Six years later, the band are still looking for mainstream success, and they return with their new single Start Again, which may just be the ticket they’ve been looking for.
The song is taken from their forthcoming album of the same name, and begins with some distortion followed by a guitar melody which maintains the speedy mood throughout the song. It’s infectious and hooky, while the typical Rhubarb lyrics are introspective and thoughtful. This is rock music, but its yearning and soulful, not angry. It’s an awesome single, and one that should stick in the hearts and minds of everyone who hears it.
The only weakness of the single is the lack of extra tracks. The only additional track on the disc is a remix of Start Again, which basically just lays a house techno beat over the top of the song. This single could definitely have benefited from some extra tracks, even just from the album so that listeners could get more of a feel for the new material. It’s the only drawback on what is otherwise a damn fine song, which should continue to get Rhubarb the national attention they have enjoyed since their career began.
