British indie-folk group Gomez have always been renowned as a laidback and enjoyable group to listen to, with each of their recordings providing a warm and pleasant atmosphere. Gomez’s latest escapade, Whatever’s On Your Mind, continues on their extraordinary run of albums full of folky goodness and is perhaps even one of their best releases yet.

Recorded between the US and the UK, Whatever’s On Your Mind is entirely self-produced, and with that has come a whole lot of freedom in the studio and the final product is living proof of that freedom, with a far more fun and involving sound than the majority of their previous releases. Opening track and lead single Options is the epitome of this, packed full of catchy lyrics and memorable melodies. This single is revolved around a simple structure of guitars, drums and lyrics, with hints of brass in between.

However, the overall highlight track would have to be the single Whatever’s On Your Mind. The success is found within simplicity and an excellent use of harmonics. The main vocalist for this track, Ben Ottewell, guides us through perfectly, with his rough, husky voice and almost intentionally accentuated twang. This track is a stereotypical ballad, fit with string orchestras and emotional vocal lines except without the smug attitude that many balladeers convey within their tunes.

Whatever’s On Your Mind is one of those albums that make for a perfect driving soundtrack. The music is relaxing, without being lethargic and doesn’t get old over multiple listens. Gomez have come into their own on this recording and have been a bit more free with their work, which has inevitably proven to be a success.
