The Whats - A Bit ofEverything with...

The Whats are Tim Steward and Dean Shwereb from Brisbane outfit Screamfeeder, and despite some interesting arrangements and unique use of drums and beat machines, the latest EP, A Bit of Everything with The Whats lacks something striking, and verges on unsatisfactory.
The punchiness and originality of early Screamfeeder tracks such as Gravity, more recent numbers like I Don’t Know What To Do Anymore, and the seemingly ‘honest rock’ present on The Whats 2005 debut All Mouth No Trousers has been lost. Whether they sacrificed some of the oomph by stripping back guitars and seizing cheap midi samples instead, ABOEWTW is an “indulgent studio project” for the time being.
There is a resemblance to The Streets, with their ambition and deliciously honest lyricism and some tracks such as Mum & Dad and Summer Ends spark interest but the enthusiasm, but it is fleeting.
But the EP is certainly not devoid of talent – there’s definitely something there, but what does appear necessary however is a settling of genre and honing in on the things that made them original rockers.
