Lous XIV - Finding OutTrue Love Is Blind
Thu 21st Jul, 2005 in Music Reviews
When “new favourite bands” are getting over-hyped in Rolling Stone and NME alike, fans of indie rock usually start slaughtering the bands credo on music forums whilst deleting their pre-release downloads from their iPods. I don’t see this happening in too great a hurry with Louis XIV. Along with their clever lyrical double-entendres, the band have resurrected an incredible range of influences while doing original songs with dirtier lyrics and pushing the whole show to a higher plane.
Shameless rip-offs Louis XIV latest single release from The Best Little Secrets Are Kept is, errr, a shameless rip-off. While the song is a mish-mash of T-Rex’s Metal Guru and a zillion Rolling Stones and The Kinks songs, you can’t deny that this is glam poprock at its best. Its almost like the band listened to T-Rex’s last release and plugged in where Marc Bolan left off.
Finding Out True Love Is Blind is pretty catchy (if not borderline annoying). You can hear too many classic rock samples in the hooks and riffs. Yeah, its really catchy. Vocalist Jason Hill (and bassist, guitarist, pianist and smarty pants producer too) also does a great job aping Iggy Pop perhaps with more of a snarl though and a sneer you can see right through your speakers.
Be warned – Louis XIV are about to take over the airwaves. Oh, did I mention you can download this ditty as a ringtone?
