67 Special - Walking Away
Tue 5th Jul, 2005 in Music Reviews
Their first release was merely last year, yet already they have clocked up tours with Dallas Crane, The Black Keys, Grinspoon and Stereophonics. Now Melbourne five-piece 67 Special await the release of their debut album, The World Can Wait, while the first single from the disc, Walking Away, has recently hit the airwaves.
Already having baked in the gold that was evident on their first EP Hey There Bomb, I was ready to gather insight into the directional approach they had chosen for their debut. After a few listens to Walking Away, I have come to various conclusions. While the tune is decent enough, it isn’t of the caliber I expected, or more bluntly, it didn’t contain the same buzzing musicality of former releases.
Commencing with a jangly riff and the introduction of Bees style organs further in, the track soon collapses into sparkling keyboard and crooning vocals. Without warning, the chorus brings harmonised pop to the foreground, while the latter minutes pass with the introduction of dancefloor worthy beat driven rock, not unlike the work of Scottish band Franz Ferdinand.
In comparison to other fodder on the market, this track isn’t that atrocious, in fact, its quite proficient. My only criticism being that previously released works have exceeded the bands current status.
