The Mission In Motion -Somewhere Safe
Mon 20th Sep, 2010 in Music Reviews
Sydney five piece rockers The Mission In Motion have earned their stripes through relentless touring and proved their potential with their last EP A Curse, A Calling. Now it is time for the release of their debut full length Somewhere Safe, on which the boys have followed through brilliantly, and recorded a solid alternative rock release.
After a short introduction the first track, The Hand That Holds You Down, shows that the group have taken their time, and spent the money necessary to capture these songs correctly. The song is an energetic opener with thumping drums and the high pitched sound of vocalist Brett Islaub at the forefront. The record’s first single, New Skin, follows, and straight away it is clear why this song was picked for radio release. Opening with very catchy gang vocals and progressing into a perfectly formed rock song with a great chorus, this band knows how to create melodies people will like. The group wear their influences on their sleaves, Taking Back Sunday springs to mind a fair bit, and intentionally or not, a lot of TBS song names appear in the lyrics on this album.
One of the most beautiful and mature moments on the record is the track, All Roads Lead To Home, a song about reflection, which is driven by a constant beat and supported by dynamic guitars. The use of harmonies is particularly impressive throughout all the songs, especially On The Wheel, which sounds similar to the music on the earlier EPs.
The record ends with one of its best tracks, Guidance, piano driven with heavy, stabbing guitars and The Storm, a small burst of hugeness in between the same samples that were used in the introduction, which rounds the album off nicely. Also included is a bonus disc with some acoustic versions of tracks from the record and some very good remixes which make you think this band could become totally electronic and still sound excellent.
The Mission In Motion have worked hard and taken the time necessary to make their debut release something special, and they have succeeded, as Somewhere Safe is truly impressive.
