Amy Meredith - Restless

www.fasterlouder.com.au

Restless, the debut album from Sydney glam-pop/rock outfit Amy Meredith is a somewhat uneven release. Unlike their unique and promising 2008 EP, Restless is a forced album that sounds as though it was written for commercial radio play.

A reworking of EP song Black Eyes opens Restless and is perhaps even better than the original version of the song, but sadly everything falls flat from here.

Second song and single release Pornstar? Let’s not go there. Lying has a pretty cool little intro, but a few synth based riffs here and there are not enough to save the song. With Faded White Dress it is pretty obvious that Amy Meredith want you to be able to dance at their gigs, but honestly, it’s just a bit too cringe worthy.

The obvious influence of The Killers song Human are evident in the guitar work and pacing of Closer, but everything on this album sounds completely the same. Space fillers are found in Kiss Me Quick and Born To Live – featuring the obvious and trite lyric “Baby we born to live”. While the last two tracks on the album, Spin Me Around and Start All Over Again are essentially the same as everything else as Amy Meredith again fail to produce anything new and exciting.

Proving that 80s pop synths and modern rock isn’t always a good combination Amy Meredith have done it all the wrong way, and appears to be victims of commercial radio’s demands. It would have been much better of Amy Meredith to produce a solid EP rather than rush out with an album.
