Fresh, clean and carefree The Joe Kings’ EP Calls in the Night is straight out toe tapping, foot thumping fun. Built on endless jam nights and sounding like a soundtrack to an endless summer road trip there are many reasons to praise WINNERS of 2010 WAMI Award for ‘Favourite Newcomer Artist’.
Opening with a funky guitar riff and then tempering with a bridge that tells a tale of a female guiding light, the title track sets the rhythm and the EP alight although, in parts, there is something hollow to the sound and the layered tracks lack continuity.
A gutsy end to Calls in the Night leads Into The Light with a measured reflection that provides early contrast to the blues rock that characterises this young duo.
The last three of the five tracks are a rambling and rocking jaunt, revealing influences and talent in surplus. This EP shines up the live sound and introduces the creative flair of Jack Stirling and Phill Leggett with impressive clarity.
