I’m willing to bet that some savvy music director will have licensed Jonathan Boulet’s A Community Service Announcement before the end of 2010. Hell, if we make it to the end of January without this track reaching every-second-ad-break ubiquity, I’ll eat my hat (full disclosure: there is no hat).
This isn’t a backhanded compliment, or sarcastic stab at quote-unquote “selling out” (whatever that means): there’s just something about the dreamy, dappled-sunlight vibe of …Community Service that would make even the angriest ad rep bliss out just a little.
The chorus lyrics are a Panda Bear-style chant; a perfectly giddy little sing-along moment that somehow bypasses – œvague’ in favour of – œall-encompassing’. Summer’s only a few weeks old, but Jonathan Boulet might’ve already written the soundtrack.
If A Community Service Announcement is all you’ve heard of Boulet, you might expect an album full of poolside party tracks. Granted, there’s a few of those on here: Continue Calling’s flamenco feel and “we’ll dance our cares away” refrain promises good times to come, and 321 Ready or Not is a scrappy outburst bubbling with the kind of child-like energy its name suggests. But Boulet is clearly not keen to be typecast, slotting in the backmasked Boards of Canada-ish Adam of Zilla and the bittersweet 10 Billion Years amongst the dizzy pop.
Though his efforts are solid, Boulet works best when the mood is lively, and the layered vocals turn into crowds singing. Even in his weaker moments, though, the production is consistently strong, surprisingly so given the album’s bedroom origins. The technology has existed for a few years now, but it still comes as a surprise when an album that sounds so professional emerges from a Castle Hill bedroom.
Oh, by the way, Jonathan? When that ad deal comes along, how about a spotter’s fee?
A Community Service Announcement is out now on Modular Records.
