Sneaky Weasel Gang bring us their highly anticipated six track EP, Bodyslide Blues. Having gone the long way to their first record, playing more than 300 shows in any venue they could find, Sneaky Weasel Gang have indeed honed their skills as one of the finest Blues acts to come out of WA. Bodyslide Blues does incredible justice to this hard working trio from Mandurah.

Hearing such solid blues is rare nowadays and for any fan of the genre this record will be a refreshing look back to artists the calibre of Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and John Mayall. The guitar work of vocalist and guitarist Dan Carroll is perfectly supported by the scintillating bass of Jason Bale and the light and shade of drummer Bryn Stanford. They take us on a journey of dreams, passion and honest talent.

The album begins with a rock blues fusion that they dub Visionary “I would have been a visionary if I had vision… but I don’t”. There is at least one person who would disagree with that statement. The track is a fine way to begin the record, combining surprisingly pleasing vocals with a heavy bass line and subtle riffs.

One of the highlights follows in Houndog Blues. This is a straight up blues track and brilliantly shows Carrol’s talents. His guitar work, string bending and timing are flawless and it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Combining that with his gruff vocal, it is truly classic blues.

The riveting and spine tingling blues track Slow Soul. is superb in every facet and brings the EP to its peak, rolling from emotional and imaginative guitar work and a beautifully flowing rhythm to a heavy fusion of distorted rock and classic blues.

Next up, it’s Stanford’s time to shine with the rocking track Cowbell Jam which begins with a funky rhythm played on the cowbell. As far as instrumentals go this one is a decent attempt but it lacks the imagery required to make it great. While it may make a good album track it doesn’t do justice to the EP.

The penultimate track is called Across the River and it might best be described as vocal blues, since the vocals are focal point of the track, and it works extremely well. It crosses over towards the end into a more rootsy style a’ la John Butler which fits nicely into the final track on the album, Free. This is a fantastic song to finish on, with a funky bass line and bouncing drum track that perfectly compliments the infectiously fun guitar riff that will leave you with a smile on your face.

Sneaky Weasel Gang have been rousing crowds on the East Coast in support of their new EP, and have a date with the Railway Hotel’s beer garden in Perth on Saturday 28th November before tripping down the WA coast to close off their tour of the country. If you’re able, go and have a look at one of the finest exports WA has produced in recent memory.
