In 2008 Iron Maiden embarked on their most challenging and adventurous tour of their career. The video footage starts off in Mumbai, India as the boys gear up to go onstage, with the first of 16 songs being Aces High. It was surprising to see how strong a following the band has in India, with the population mad for Heavy Metal in a big way.
There’s concert footage and then the band get into a van post show, heading to their next destination as they summarise the night, and so on is the formula for this feature. Drummer Nicko McBrain has never been shy to express himself, throwing in quirky remarks reminiscent of his “Listen with Nicko” recordings on special album releases. A few stops later and Maiden reach Australia with the Aussie accent exploding into Maiden chants.
For good measure the boys show what they get up to on their days off, Adrian Smith playing tennis with Pat Cash, McBrain and Dave Murray playing golf and Harris spending time with family. The most interesting character and our narrator for a good part of the film is Bruce Dickinson, whose propensity to excel at multiple tasks leaves me in awe – singer, radio show host, fencer, DJ, historian, TV presenter, record producer, novelist and songwriter. He even flys the plane “Ed Force 1” on their “Somewhere Back in Time” world tour.
For all Maiden fans this is a must see and equally for non fans, the film eloquently summarises the bands history, informing and entertaining in equal measures. The bonus disk satiates appetites with a full feature of each song played. The experience would have been best viewed at the cinemas, when it was playing earlier in the year but a drink in hand and a sing along at home is fun as well.
