Grinspoon - Hold On Me
Wed 16th Mar, 2005 in Music Reviews
Who would have thought we’d see ever the day when Grinspoon released a song containing the words, ‘you’ve got a hold on me, girl’? Such is the nature of third single from Thrills, Kills & Sunday Pills, entitled Hold On Me, a song which is sure to further divide the opinions of Grinspoon fans everywhere.
Following in the vein of previous single Better Off Alone, it is a steady departure from the Grinspoon of yore, but it is a far, far punchier song than the abovementioned track. Yet it isn’t anywhere near as rocking as Hard Act To Follow. It lies somewhere in between.
Phil soars through the chorus, and the song is full of catchy hooks that are bound to get people a-moving on the dance floor at the band’s gigs. There is an element of cheesiness there, particularly in the line ‘how come you never wanna dance with me anymore?’, but this is strangely one of the most fun lines to sing along to. If you’re into that (I know I am!!).
It is an inoffensive, nice song. Grinspoon prove that they certainly still have a semblance of ‘it’ but ‘it’ is being translated through safer, more accessible means.
