Theredsunband continue on in the background, beavering away at what they do best – making great music. Critical acclaim, good tunes and musicianship unfortunately doesn’t always translate to mainstream success, but theredsunband have earned their time to shine.

It would be unfortunate to let their latest effort The Shiralee pass without making a song and dance about it. To the outsider, The Shiralee does seem like an eternity in the making, but as they say in the classics: “Patience is all you need.”

The combination of sisters Sarah and Lizzie Kelly and the token male Jasper Fenton have shown that they have taken a step up and made significant progression compared to their debut. The standard and quality of songs deserve gold stars, making the final result something to be all the more proud of. The listening experience just nudges over the thirty-minute mark, but it is abundantly clear that there is no need to pad things out unnecessarily. The crowd pleaser (well from their last Adelaide show at the Jade Monkey), which is quite a way down the batting order, is The Eagle.

There a few gems on the album waiting to be discovered. Album opener Like An Arrow and Heartbreaker are both just begging to be singles. The album does meander along at an even pace, which may frustrate some listeners, but persistence with the journey is worthwhile. The eclectic cover of Bill Callaghan’s Babysphere is great inclusion and Steer Your Helm Away is a stunner also. Theredsunband – remember the name, buy the album.
