Lisa Mitchell - WelcomeTo The Afternoon
Wed 2nd Jul, 2008 in Music Reviews
Australia continues to maintain a proud tradition of nurturing some fine singer-songwriters. Another to join that league is Melbourne born and bred Lisa Mitchell. For a young lass who we first saw rise to prominence on Australia Idol as an introverted – œcherub-like’ teen has forged a promising career beyond covers to deliver a stunning EP. Aptly titled Welcome To The Afternoon, it can be described as a unique blend of heartfelt, alterna-folk-pop.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have considered talking up someone from that awful TV program mentioned previously, but I have no hesitation in saying that Lisa Mitchell is a genuine talent and her future is unlimited. Picture the music of Holly Throsby and Sarah Blasko rolled into one, and you’re close to the sound of Lisa Mitchell. The four tracks on offer are stunning. They only raise expectations of what a full-length album may offer – considering that she has already collaborated with the likes of Ben Lee, Paul Mac, Clare Bowditch, Katy Steele, Bob Evans, and not forgetting Dan Hume, who produced and played on most of the tracks on the EP.
Opening with ghostly meander of See You When You Get Here to the cool-kids party anthem in Neapolitan Dreams to the intimate charm of Far Far Far Away is enough to get excited about. However, tucked away at the back is a real gem by way of A Little Ramblin’ Blues For Any Hour. This free-styling, hot lil’ number with guitars in tow sees Lisa Mitchell and friend Dan Hume cut loose and finish the EP off in fine style.
