After listening to the latest effort from Masterthief it is hard to believe they come from Adelaide. Return To Earth is a debut to stand up and take notice of, as there is plenty to like about these young lads. Their MySpace site describes themselves as refreshingly unique and indeed they are compared to the new crop of acts trying their hardest to break in to a very competitive scene.
The Masterthief sound is driven by passionate and heartfelt vocals supported by a guitar. If these lads have dreams they should be shopping around for a manager and getting on the first plane to Sydney to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with. The song writing really does stand out with tracks such as Exit Sign and Return To Earth emerging as some of the album’s finest moments in amongst many.
The cover version of King Of Pain (by The Police) is a ripper that showcases another side to the band. If I was going to be critical the album is a little to polished but how can you question the endeavours of band members who have graduated at the Conservatorium at Adelaide University – as the bio mentions this has had a huge bearing on their aesthetic approach to pop-rock grooving. Head down to your local and order this one – fantastic!
