City And Colour is Dallas Green. Believe it or not, the same Dallas Green that’s also the rhythm guitarist for five-piece hard-rock band Alexisonfire. Just in case it needs to be spelt out, the name City And Colour is derived from Dallas Green’s name – Dallas is a city and green is…yeah, you get it.
If you are an Alexisonfire fan, forget what you know. Leave your expectations at the door, before walking into the Dallas Green room. Bring Me Your Love, the second album for City And Colour, is poles apart genre-wise from anything Alexisonfire have created. If the album has to be categorised, it’d fall into the “folk” basket. That’s right, you heard correctly folks.
Folk music is typically defined as music of the people, giving off visions of swaying hippies around a bonfire shaking their tambourines, clapping to the tune, and singing along with big smiles.
And this album is exactly that vision, but with a slight twist. There are tambourines and banjos, there are harmonicas, and there’s rhythmic clapping that’s in time with the acoustic guitar. However, the dark lyrical content provides an important ironic element that balances out the feel-good tunes.
Whilst Bring Me Your Love is not for everyone, it’s full of easy listening and consistently good songs.
City And Colour along with Alexisonfire will be playing at the Soundwave Festival around the country at the end of February. It goes without saying, that Alexisonfire will rock the stage, but open your mind and check out City And Colour while you’re there.
