Kate Nash has received a huge comparison to Lily Allen, and it’s understandable really. Anyone listening to the tongue-in-cheek songs coming out of Upper London recently would be able to see the similarities. But even knowing that these are two somewhat similar artists in their style, I have to completely disregard Lily Allen while listening to Made Of Bricks.

The album starts off with a deep drum beat and may cause some confusion to some who’ve heard tell of the Allen comparisons. But then the lyrics kick in and you have to smile at the barely hidden innuendo of the song with her sultry voice.

After that, you pretty much kick it into her hit single, Foundations. There is a reason that this song was a hit, there’s a reason that this album is a hit. Nash has a talent for the dry and sarcastic type of songs that somehow everyone can relate to, no matter how specific a topic they cover. These songs are the reason that people strangely from Australia or America start signing oddly in a Cockney accent.

Of course, there are ups and downs on Made From Bricks. Honourable mentions go to Mouthwash, Skeleton Song and Merry Happy; who truly deserve as much recognition as her other more popular songs. Then there is Dickhead, which to its credit isn’t truly bad … It’s just not all that great. It seems a tad contrived in it’s lyrics but hey, that’s my opinion. Birds is a sweet song, one of the first she released on her debut Caroline Is A Victim as an acoustic version. A couple of the songs simply blend together because you feel like you have heard them before. Her style can get a tad repetitive but I suppose she is resting under the idea that if something works, why the hell mess with it?

Some moments drag, others make you feel like getting up and singing loudly into that hairbrush… All in all, it is a good album, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it and there are definitely some songs there that were on repeat for a very long time. If you enjoy witty song-writing, indie rock and yes, Lily Allen. This girl is for you.
