wOg - We Are wOg
Wed 17th Oct, 2007 in Music Reviews
Robbie Avenaim (What Is Music) and Ray Ahn (Hard-Ons & Nunchukka Superfly) have teamed up to form one of the Australia’s most unique acts to date. The two have been playing around Australia for almost a year promoting their debut album, We Are wOg. The eight-track album clocks in at 15 minutes. With Ray on bass and Robbie on drums and both sharing vocal duties, they have created their own tribal language. There are no guitars or any digital effects which gives it a really raw feel to it.
The music is fast, loud and hard to follow at times. Its something that must be seen to be believed. The standout tracks are To Halal & Back with it’s catchy cowbell chorus and the opening track, wOg Rocks Your Liver which for the first half sounds like a heated argument between two foreign neighbours until the music sets in.
This band has perhaps the most interesting live show of any Australian act, especially that it’s only two guys and that they don’t have any costumes or light shows. What makes them so unique is that in a 30-45 minute set they might play about 10-15 minutes of actual music. In between songs the two are like a comedy act, the jokes just don’t stop. Ray tells stories of past Hard-Ons tours and leaves the audience in stitches.
wOg’s We Are Wog is out now on Chatterbox records.
