Athlete - Beyond theNeighbourhood

English indie rockers Athlete are back with their third studio album, Beyond the Neighbourhood. Their continuing evolution is marked on this album by their willingness to experiment and mature as artists, although their signature quirkiness is still evident.

Beyond the Neighbourhood was recorded and produced by the band in their own studio, which makes for a more low-key and organic feel then their previous albums. The album has an otherworldly feel and is reminiscent at times of The Postal Service. Some critics are comparing Athlete to fellow Englishmen Coldplay, and while it might be a while until they reach similar iconic status, I can see slight similarities (whether that be a positive or a negative is for you to decide).

Their first single, Hurricane, is rather uninspired. It seems to be trying too hard to generate commercial success with upbeat lyrics and predictable guitar melodies. However, the electronic hooks and odd lyrics on Airport Disco expose Athlete’s promise as an up and coming force in the indie rock scene. Other tracks such as The Outsiders and Flying Over Bus Stops also better showcases their style and talent as musicians.

Beyond the Neighbourhood is a solid effort by Athlete. The album gains appeal after listening to it a few times and is best appreciated when the listener can concentrate on the lyrics and the experimental nature of Athlete’s newest sound.
