I Heart Hiroshima
Tuff Teef
I was exposed to I Heart Hiroshima initially while I was for the Aussie Music blog whothehell.net. Creator Jerry Soer sent me on a fact-finding mission to unearth these indie cult masters and bring them into public consciousness.
To that end, I bought their EP _A 3 Letter Word for Candy _ off Itunes. Having heard the lo-fi brilliance of songs like – œLondon In Love’, I was hooked. But the one thing about this band that stuck with me, and yes, I am about to quote myself, was “When a grassroots label pumps some serious money into their studio time, these guys will be huge.” And a year or so later, it’s happened. These punks have ditched the fuzz for a cleaner, more produced sound, and it freaking rocks hard! _Tuff Teef _ is a non-stop rollercoaster ride through Sonic Youth, taking a right at the Pixies and hitting the Strokes for a brief pit stop.
Whoever the girl in this outfit is (I’m yet to discover her name) [Susie Patten -Ed] must be the coolest motherfucker on the East Coast. Her detached vocals are wicked fun and they now compliment the rough yelp of her gender-frontman-opposite.
The guitars are still on the fuzz, but in a good way – I still don’t miss the bass. And best of all, the drums really cut through – finally. Altogether, _Tuff Teef _ is a neat set of well-written indie-punk tunes which will definitely fulfil the desires of anyone looking for something a bit left-field
