Streetlight, Colors, TheBureau, Harlequin League @ TheFoundry, Perth (25/7/2007)
Wed 1st Aug, 2007 in Gig Reviews
The night kicked off with Harlequin League, who seem to improve every time they play. With such an electric stage vibe and undeniably catchy songs, it’s not hard to see why these boys are finalists for The Next Big Thing competition. Apart from thrashing out the tunes so hard that drummer Miles Lisman busted his snare, the set had a good mix of rock, new noise and pop. Finishing their set nicely with Charlie’s Town, singer and bassist James Rogers shows off the more melodic side to his voice.
Little could be said about the next band The Bureau, which had the crowd looking confused and bored with the vocals of a screamo band singer mixed with slow indie rocks sounds, it didn’t seem to mesh well creating a sort of audience anticipation for their set to come to a swift end. Aside from the fact that the band members looked bored themselves, the kind of lyrics their songs were based around had been done before, contributing to the lack of wow factor.
Colors were up next which were the first band of the night that really got the crowd moving and bobbing their heads along in approval to their remarkable mix of rock and indie that you could easily dance to. As the set progressed, it exhibited just how talented this young group was and how hard it was to find something to fault them on.
Finally Streetlight appeared as they played their first show of many as they tour around the country in the following weeks. Never failing to impress, Streetlight’s tight performance proved to be nothing short of spectacular with perfect synchronisation and the distinctive vocal stylings of Le Craft. With so much talent and live energy, it’s pretty clear why these guys have an ever-growing fanbase around Australia and as usual, Craft’s extreme and often risky stage antics left the audience in awe. Keep an eye out for these guys as they are being referred to more and more as one of the best things to come out of Perth in a long time.
