Black Friday superstitions didn’t get the better of rock juggernaut-in-waiting Calerway when they launched their new double A-side in monstrous fashion at Amplifier Bar on Friday 13th. Luck was never a concern as they ripped up the stage with several other local bands and even one from NSW.

The first band up was Avalore, a relatively young local band who have been popping up all over the scene. Validating why they have been awarded so many support gigs in the past few months, they set the tone for the rest of night with their high-energy performance.

The Dirty Secrets then added an electro-rock flavour to the evening. In a flurry of colour, light and sound they captured the audience with their just-got-to-dance-to tracks, providing an unexpected but not unwelcome change in genre.

All the way from the Central Coast came Angela’s Dish to bring the night back to its origins. This indie rock band are well-travelled thanks to their music and it was not hard to see why. They smoothly pulled themselves through a few instrument malfunctions, sacrificing no part of the musical integrity.

Calerway took the stage and the room exploded with their unique brand of rock. Lead singer Jaun-Paul Rebola belted out track after track with verve and vigour, not once losing enthusiasm. The intricate basslines were executed without fault by bass guitarist Cameron Edwards while James Watroba (drums) made every thump on the skins better than the last. Churning out brand new tracks such as Believe It and Just Drive, Phillip O’Reilly (lead guitarist) worked the stage in fine form while delivering impressive licks throughout the set. Exiting with one of their first singles, a pumping track called Loaded, Calerway rounded off an energetic performance bringing to a close an evening of exceptional live music.
