Behind Crimson Eyes @ TheBakery (23/06/2007)

Currently touring on the success of their recently released album Scream Out Your Name to the Night and their hit song You’ve Had Your Chance , which is getting frequent play on mainstream music television shows, Behind Crimson Eyes are bring non-mainstream fans in Perth a world of joy in this leg of their travels.

As an alternative rock band from the eastern states, Behind Crimson Eyes have a heap of performance experience tucked under their belts, yet they still have the humbleness and the generosity to play in a relatively small venue such as The Bakery and in front of a very small audience forming a mosh pit of no more than three people deep and eight people across.

The entire night was a tickling to the ear bud of any alternative/punk rock go-er as the quality supporting acts, Elora Danan and Antistatic were of equal skill in comparison to Crimson Eyes, just a little less reputable.

Elora Danan were one of the first acts to kick off the night with their entertaining five piece band using the whole stage as their playing field, instead of just standing in one spot. Lead vocalist George Green putting most of the entertainment into the performance by using the whole stage was much like the performance from lead vocalist Josh from Behind Crimson Eyes.

As Elora Danan are currently doing their interstate tour circuit it’s a wonder how they will fare in the future as they drew quite a large audience just for their show at the bakery.

Continuing the alternative rock theme were local act Antistatic, who, while only a young three piece act, entertained audiences quite well, especially with their much loved song Stand Up in Disguise provoking a few spectators to perform some 2-step moves where lead vocalist Basin commented “That shit floats my boat” enthusing more members of the audience to follow in suite.

What one would expect to be a packed room by the time Behind Crimson Eyes came on stage was quite the opposite, as the room was still quite vacant, most likely due to this bands underground status where fans are – œin the know’ in regards to music. The band kicked off with the stage blackening and the drummer kicking away at his pedal, then having the band members one by one walk on stage to an applaud from the mini crowd of Crimson fans.

As a five piece set just like Elora Danan, Crimson eyes use that multi-instrumental sound. On top of that the three vocalists sound very well in combination with the multiple layers of music giving the band that – œbig’ sound. The band’s sound is really emphasized in parts where lead singer Josh is screaming out his lungs and the backup singers are singing away especially so during the song The Art of War, in which the very small crowd at the front of the stage closely resembled a mosh pit. Of their songs You’ve Had Your Chance was one of the most recognized by the audience because of its popularity amongst mainstream listeners; however the Art of War was by far the most applauded and easily recognizable from its soft beginning.

The band actually managed to have an encore calling out of the few who remained in front of the stage at the end of the gig, with George Green from Elora Danan hopping on the drums to support the fans pleas for an encore, but to much disappointment there was no return for Behind Crimson Eyes. The lead singer opting instead to have a drink with two diehard fans. It’s a rare thing to see an intimate show from such a quality Australian band, fans were lucky to have been in such a small audience.
