Something With Numbers @ ANUBar (03/05/04)
Sun 20th May, 2007 in Gig Reviews
The liquored up crowd that had filled the ANU Bar on the 3rd May had begun the partying well before a band was set to be on stage. The space in front of the stage may have been empty, but it was still obvious that this was the largest crowd Something With Numbers have ever pulled in Canberra.
The Lazys opening the night with their blend of alternative prog rock definitely caught the otherwise pool-playing distracted crowd. Although only a few loyal fans were in the room they still danced up a storm in the large space left available in front of the stage. With strong guitar and drum solos the standing crowd grew noticeably larger as the set continued, and the band members lost more clothing. The Inches were next to step up on stage. Again only a handful of actual fans had walked into the bar that night, but it is certain by the end of the night they had gained many many more. The Inches have a great mix of old school and pop rock. The crowd couldn’t help but to break out into a swing style of dance. Dress Like Gods was the standout highlight of their enlightening set.The whole of Australia has been long awaiting the ‘Goodbye Mickey Finn Tour’. As much as we all love onstage performances, everyone has been dying to finally hear Apple of the Eye at the start of a set. It is the perfect song to pump up a crowd and get everyone on their feet dancing. And dancing is what they did. Playing a lot of their old music kept the diehard fans in the crowd happy.
After a short distraction, in which the band stopped playing, due to a fight that broke out in the front row of the mosh pit. The set changed pace and Jake led the band through some of their slower songs. Once the happy mood of the crowd had been restored they covered The Choir Boys Run to Paradise and finished up with a joint performance with both The Lazys and The Inches on stage.
Everyone was in very high spirits as they hung around for a few drinks after the show. Hopefully next time Something With Numbers return to Canberra, it will be a licensed All Ages gig and they’ll turn out their biggest crowd yet.
