Love of Diagrams, Hit theJackpot!, Panel of Judges @Jive, (10/05/07)

Ignoring the jet lag and fatigue caused by touring the UK and Europe for the last few months, experimental band Love of diagrams entertained an impressive sized crowd at Jive bar on Thursday night, for their _ Mosiac_ album launch.

With a set of vocal chords which could silence the noisiest of crowds, lead singer Antonia Selbach impressed this reviewer, hitting all the right notes. Love of Diagrams unique sound, along with instrument juggling and rarely seen tame stage antics, proved they are worth a listen, focusing on their music rather than their image.

Warming up the already giddy crowd, support acts Panel of Judges and Hit the Jackpot! did a mighty job of getting the work-fatigued crowd in mood. Hit the Jackpot’ are proving to be the band to watch, supporting Children Collide a few weeks previously and seem to have appeared out of nowhere while making waves on the local music scene.

Panel of Judges also displayed their laidback old-school sound, but failed to make much of a dent in the memory, leading me to conclude, if you can’t remember their sound, or much of their performance, perhaps it isn’t worth remembering?

Pumping out a handful of hits, including dead set crowd favourites Pace and the Patience and unexpected and brief encore Trouble, Love of Diagrams played a show, I wouldn’t want to miss a second time. Rising from the heated competition that is the Melbournian music scene, they have succeeded in creating an all-new and very rare quirky sound not to be easily forgotten.

Firing up the 150 strong crowd, the trio proved they are no lightweights, with a decent sized circle of happy dancers crowding the front of the stage, supporting the trio throughout the set. The band also get kudos for being clued-in to what music the kids want these days, selling vinyl copies of their album Mosaic for a mere $20, a feat almost unheard of.

Keep your eye on Love of Diagrams, sit back and watch them work their way to the top of the Australian music industry, which should be no hard task, as I can guarantee they have what it takes to make it anywhere else.
