A decent-sized crowd had gathered inside the Troubadour’s dark surrounds by the time local heroes Wind And Brackets hit the stage. Once again, the band delivered a blistering set of rockabilly-infused post-punk indie rock, or whatever you want to call it, to a welcoming audience. The usual energetic band devotees weren’t to be seen during the set for reasons unknown, but the band still enjoyed warm appreciation from the slowly-growing crowd.

After a short break, The Fancy Boys opened their set to a slightly larger crowd. Their blend of garage rock and glammy synth sat well with the crowd, and the band’s peppy stage presence was a nice change from the more serious Wind And Brackets. They rocked through their set at a blistering pace and surely won many audience members over with their quasi-French garage punk rock.

Violent Soho were raring to put their grunge-laden tunes on display to a now quite full Troubadour crowd, and the heavy change in tone helped to prepare the crowd for the Bit By Bats onslaught. The band’s obvious Pixies, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins influences permeate their songs, but still there is something slightly refreshing about this local act. Lead singer Luke’s almost apathetic posture is in direct contrast to his hard-hitting vocal delivery, and the rest of the band contribute their fair share of heaviness to make this band a cut above other grunge-inspired bands.

It had been less than two months since Bit By Bats last played in Brisbane, supporting former Millencolin singer Nikola Sarkevic, but many people had obviously been missing the Melbourne three-piece over that short period. Fresh from playing at Canadian Music Week and recently releasing their debut album Go, Go, Go!, the indie garage rock band were ready to put on an amazing live show for their Brisbane fans, and indeed they did. The set included mainly songs off their new album, such as the fantastic One Six One, but there were a couple of great tracks off their previous two EPs, most notably Up All Night, which was performed with incredible energy and quality. Overall, the Melbourne trio managed to finish the night in style and left their many fans astounded at their powerful live set and ever increasing talent. For those of you who may have missed the band this time around, fear not, as they will return to Brisbane in June for the Pauhaus festival, in which they will surely put on another scintillating performance.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!
