New Buffalo, Ned Collette @The Troubadour, Brisbane,08/03/2007

New Buffalo has certainly made a mark on Brisbane and it was quite surprising to see the number of fans that packed the Troubadour on Thursday night.

The night started with Ned Collette. Ned played a mix of tracks from his album
Jokes and Trials. Despite the best of intentions, something in Ned’s
performance missed the mark. Ned’s entire set consisted of him playing a little
guitar to a backing track. The disappointment stemmed from the fact that most of the good music seemed to come from the backing track, which left the audience with little to
enjoy live.

Highlight of Ned’s set was definitely Lost and Found, which had a very haunting
feel to it. Overall, most of the songs felt to drag on a little bit and by the
end of the set, Ned had lost the attention of the audience.

Not long after, New Buffalo took to the stage. Sally Seltmann has a sweetness about her, which lulled the audience into complete silence. She chatted only briefly with the audience between songs leaving the audience to draw their own meaning from her music.

Seltmann drifted from her keyboard, to an electric guitar and onto an acoustic
guitar, playing a mix of songs from her debut album The Last Beautiful Day and
giving us a preview of tracks from her new album Somewhere, Anywhere.

The highlight of the set was definitely Misery and Mountains, Arrows and Bones, a bittersweet track which seems to remind you of every bad break up you’ve experienced.

New Buffalo finished the evening with Cheer Me Up Thank You, the single from
their forthcoming album. They returned to the stage briefly with an encore of
Yes. While it wasn’t an overly memorable gig, it was certainly enjoyable and is
a great indication that forthcoming album Somewhere, Anywhere will certainly be worth a listen.
