The Whitlams, Bobby Flynn and The Rocketsmiths played to a hot, but happy crowd on Friday night.

The night kicked off with local Brisbane band, The Rocketsmiths. The Rocketsmiths are a bunch of geeky guys who know how to have fun. Dressed in shirts, ties and bad pants they kept the crowd entertained with a few of their original songs including Summer Holiday and Cliche Love Song. Their dopey grins and onstage antics distract you from the fact that their music isn’t very good. It doesn’t matter though, because something about these guys makes you love them anyway.

Not long after, Bobby Flynn took over the stage with his band, Omega III. At this point you realise two things. His hair is a lot bigger in real life than it is on tv and that his stint on Australian Idol didn’t come close to portraying just how talented he is. In fact, if it weren’t for the entourage of screaming girls in one corner of the audience, you could easily forget that Bobby Flynn ever went near Australian Idol.

Bobby played a fantastic set which comprised of several of his original songs including Idol favourite The Boy Had Trouble. Bobby’s band is incredibaly talented and are much more than just a backing band to a solo artist. Lead guitarist Zachary Armytage was a crowd favourite with his passionate solos. Overall, Bobby and his band played a fantastic set and reminded us once again of the supreme talent that seems to pour out of Brisbane.

After a long and somewhat sweaty stage the Whitlams opened with old favourite I Will Not Go Quietly. They pleased the crowd with a collection of songs both new and old and gave us a sample of their new single Beautiful As You.

Overall the Whitlams played a highly enjoyable and tight set which reminded us that they’ve been doing this for years and that they’re bloody good at what they do. The crowd cheered as they fell into a heart warming rendition of Fall For You. Frontman Tim Freedman asked the audience to pretend they were in New York in winter before playing a gorgeous rendition of Fondness Makes the Heart Grow Absent.

Highlight of the evening was definitely their hit song Blow Up the Pokies. However, special mention also goes to their great rendition of I Was Alive which was more rock and less piano. It definitely sped the tempo up a little bit and broke the laid back vibe that blanketed the crowd.

Towards the end they suprised the crowd with a new start to old favourite No Aphrodisiac. It seems no matter how many times you hear this song, it never fails to entertain. Which is pretty much sums up the Whitlams. No matter how many times you see them, you’ll always enjoy it.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!

You have a fluid style and a knack for words! I really enjoyed reading this. Only thing I'd suggest is that the flicking back and forth in tenses feels a little odd. You should try to stick to one tense throughout if possible.
