The first band of the night was Adelaide band The Rivalry, warming up the crowd with their energetic performance was. The Rivalry is an intense band that consists of six members and two vocalists. The two vocalists complement each other so well. They sounds great. One with a deep, heavy growl that’s very metal and the other has an energetic scream, with bounding energy on stage. Their set was short but sweet. It was interesting that this band was chosen to play with Suffocation as their styles are, well, different.

Next up on stage were three piece band Stargazer that seemed to really have it together. With the guitarist and bassist sinning and the drummer not having a very complex drum kit the sound that they made was still exciting.

Then the main act Suffocation, who formed in 1990 have come all the way from New York to play for the very first time in Adelaide, Australia, walked out onto the stage. The extreme Black Metal band Suffocation graced Adelaide with is presents for a Valentines Day that no one there will forget in a hurry. The crowd was not at capacity but they were ready for the onslaught of Suffocation. Their set was tight and their music tighter, all together their performance was as brutal as it comes. The band consists of five members Frank Mullen on vocals sure knew how to get the party started encouraging the crowd all the way. The two are guitarist Terrance Hobbs and Guy Marchais and the Bassist goes by the name Derek Boyer and the crazy influence in the band the drummer Mike Smith. This line up had changed several times, with a break up in between but it seems as though Suffocation are back and ready to thrash out the world of Metal.

Rocking out with songs from all their albums, like Eating the Sporn. This song went out to all the mothers in the audience whose children were serial killers and it got a laugh from many of the ladies in the crowd. Frank Mullen was very entertaining and funny onstage, really getting the crowd pumped. He kept pushing for a circle pit just like the old days but was fairly unsuccessful. They didn’t seem to have a set list as they did a quick request from the crowd, someone yelled out and Frank said “what, what” then started the song, Pierced from Within. this song comes from the last album they produced back in 1995.

All in all this was a live show quite like no other; these boys really know how to perform for the fans. Their music has a talented complexity to it as well as being unrelentingly extreme. Their infamous New York death metal sound excited the crowd. Even though this band is very brutal they still incorporate technical styles into their music. The drummer, who is very talented and the crowd loved, was so very quick with his double kick, my ears could not keep up but my body defiantly could feel it.
