With a theatrical concept album under their belt, a new and improved sense of fashion and a live reputation to be proud of, is there a more relevant band at the moment than My Chemical Romance? The 200-metre long line for the show suggested that everyone had caught on that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to catch a revolutionary band performing live.
The show was held at Metro City, promising in itself as Perth’s best live venue hands down. The crowd was dominated by teenage girls in black shirts - which was to be expected - but there was a surprisingly vast range of demographics present. Whether it was the 50 year old fathers there to accompany/protect their daughters or the four year olds who were there for God knows what, everyone was highly anticipating what was about to come.
Supporting My Chemical Romance were Australian emo/rock outfit Another Day Down, who really impressed the crowd with their powerful live performance and set the tempo for the headliners. Another Day Down boast a sound that is a hybrid of bands like Senses Fail and early Taking Back Sunday, not to mention a lineup that includes three vocalists – a recipe for success.
When My Chemical Romance finally hit the stage, a black sheet reading ‘THE BLACK PARADE’ covered the front of the stage, setting the scene for the night. The band played the beginning of The End before the sheet dropped and the crowd gathered their first glimpse at the band they love so much. With his fist clenched in the air and an aggressive stare on his face, it was evident that vocalist Gerard Way meant business and had come here with the intent of showing the crowd something they had never seen before – and boy, did he do just that.
Their performance was nothing short of impeccable with incredible stage presence courtesy of lead guitarist Ray Torro, a new and improved mastering of the vocal scale by Way and a tight musical performance by the band as a whole. They played a perfect mix of new hits and old favourites with the crowd hanging onto every word that left Way’s lips.
The best bands are those that defy genres. Some of the set was emo, some was screamo, even a bit of it was pop at times but the sound that dominated the gig and made it so special was that of My Chemical Romance. Cancer, Teenagers and Famous Last Words were all highlights, but it was the overall performance of the band that was so impressive, regardless of which songs they played. There is no doubt that everybody there will fondly recall the time they saw My Chemical Romance at Metro City and how incredible it made them feel.
