Sunk Loto @ Caringbah Bizzo's,Sydney (23/12/06)
Thu 28th Dec, 2006 in Gig Reviews
On an East Coast tour, that includes the Pyramid Rock Festival on New Year’s Eve, with acts like Silverchair, the living end, Ugly Duckling, Karnivool plus many more, Sunk Loto promote their new bass player, Rob Kaay and their new sound - tipped as being a much heavier experience for the band’s many fans.
The support act is Escape Route, a band I haven’t seen before and due to my bad luck with the cabbie only got to see half of their set, which was very powerful. Their singer’s voice is extremely melodic, and goes in great with the heavily melodic tunes the band supports him with. They are a band I’m looking forward to seeing again.
Irrelevant were second on the bill. The five piece powerful unit came into full swing, getting the crowd moving with their screaming vocals and heavy tunes.
Personally, I really do like the older Sunk. I think their EP Social Anxiety was a great release, Big Picture Lies was also a good album, and Between Birth and Death is an album I often listen to, as I enjoy it very much. I stand around, waiting to hear the new songs they play; we did get a little taste of them at the start of the year at the same venue, which was a very powerful gig.
They start with Five Years of Silence, the opening song from between Birth and Death, with that single ferocious roar the crowd know it’s time to get crazy! Then onto Erased with the chunky intro, and Jason’s screaming vocals, this song gets the crowd singing up a bit. Empty and Alone was the next song played, with the strumming of the intro and the big beats from Dane behind the kit, this is a great song from the second album. Jason uses the full extent of his voice in this song during the chorus, and the verse is just all guts, a good metal song
With a little bit of confusion on what the next song is they get into their first single off Between Birth and Death Everything Everyway. A love song – or so most people who hear the lyrics conclude. Live, however, it’s a song with a lot of intensity. They then played a new song In Darkness We Prevail, very heavy, and a sign of what the new Sunk Loto album is going to sound like. Luke then does his set up for his effects for the intro of Help, a melodic intro with Jason’s howling vocals, which then goes into some real chunky chords and beefier lyrics.
They then play the last song off the album, Soul Worn Thin, again very melodic intro, and with its half spoken vocal, Jason again proves to me at least that he has a great voice. They play a new song again, this one being titled Dust 2 Dust, very heavy and it gets the crowd into a frenzy of neck abusing head banging that we all regret the next day. Fall Apart is next, a bit of question-answer lyrics between Jason and Luke. They follow that up with Public Imagery, a song that from the start is just belted out from the bottom of Jason’s lungs.
Death in Satisfaction, another new song was next, this was very loud, very heavy and very good! Then it was time to take a trip back into memory lane, they played Lift a track from their first EP, when they were still teenagers, One more new song, with the lovely title of Kill Your Soul, you knew this song would not be soft in anyway, and that was right, They finished with Burning Bridges with has a whispering opening lyrics that then switches to a chunky verse.
Again, Sunk Loto have put on a great show, they have matured very much over the years and I think their touring experiences over in the states with the big bands really shows they know how to put on a good powerful hour of music! The new album is going to be heavy, something that seems to be missing in the Aussie music scene I think at the moment!
