Adelaide’s Punks were out in force on this hot Friday night, and with good cause the Frenzal Rhomb boys were back in town. It’s been a long time since Frenzal had played in Adelaide and the excitement around the Adelaide Uni Bar was intense.

First up were Adelaide punk rockers The Brews, who as always put on a short sharp set full of energy. I’ve seen these guys open for a couple of bands now and they always put on a good show, its good to see that Adelaide’s punk scene isn’t dead.

Next up were the better know The Lawrence Arms from Chicago. These guys could probably headline their own tour, well the guys down the front chanting “better than Frenzal”, certainly thought so anyway. Even though it was about 100 degrees in the venue Lawrence Arms had the crowd whipped into a frenzy from go to wow. As always, there were a couple of Frenzal fans in the front row giving the opening act a hard time, but Brendan and Chris took it in their stride and continued to put on an awesome show. By the end the crowd was fired up and ready for the main act.

Then it was time for the much awaited return of Frenzal Rhomb. The boys launched into high energy set comprised mostly of new stuff, but played enough classic tunes to keep the ‘old school’ fans happy. The band seemed in good spirits and partook in plenty of banter with the crowd as only Frenzal can, Jay on several occasions singing with the crowd from the front row. Highlights included Punch In The Face, Racist, Never Had So Much Fun, Uncle Ken, Not So Tough Now, 4 Litres, Dugadugabowbow and Lindsey’s new emo look accompanied by snide comments about always being sad. The set was completed by the classic Genius and that was the last we saw of Jay and Tom. Gordy and Lindsey, however, returned to play a one song encore which was an acoustic tune about liking Homo’s. Then just as quickly as it had begun it was all over. The crowd hungry for more, chanted for Frenzal to return to the stage, but alas the night was over. Lets hope the wait for the next Frenzal show is only short. In my selfish opinion Jay and the Doctor should ‘fuck off’ their morning radio gig and start touring more often.
