As the tight possies of emotionally tortured youngsters in black entered the Embassy, Smithtown Riot opened the scene with songs from their album Smoke and Mirrors; think Linkin Park meets Kiss meets After the Fall but harder, faster and louder. This group of five humoured the eccentric crowd with their constant change in rhythms and their 80s styled solos. Their quite ballsy song Spin and Take the Money was one I could walk away humming, and Control impressed with its very harmful power chords and ripping solos.
To follow, rather quickly might I add (well done to the Embassy crew to get this ball rolling), were the boys from Amberdeen. Apart from the tuning up on stage creating slow transitions between songs, shaky outros, and possibly a little too much screaming in the wrong places, I must give credit to these boys for their use of acoustic breaks to ease the pain. One of these songs in particular strangely gave me the feeling of painful longing, the type when there is a hole to fill in your life. Kudos to the boys for achieving this. Their EP Not Forgotten Freedom is one worth picking up.
At 3.40, the kiddies were feeling a little more mobile and decided to cut some moves on the floor to the sound of a powerful rock/punk trio called Acid Eyeliner from the west. I feel I should go into a little more detail on these boys, mainly just to emphasise how important it is for you to get out there and hunt them down. From someone not being big on the punk scene I had to sit down after these boys had finished and take a few big breaths, to calm myself down again, I think I had fallen in love.
I’m not going to give you a typical ‘sounds like’ break-down, because these boys have their own sound. The trio is made up of Lukey Lukess on guitar (girls seemed to follow this man around everywhere), Sam Clayton on bass (who rarely ever stood still on stage) and Murray “danger” Sheridan on drums (who wowed us all with a two minute drum solo that just kept getting better and better). You don’t see many people happily sit through one of those but no one budged from their eager positions.
Just a few songs to name, Do Your Eyes Bleed When You Cry, not as ‘emo’ as the name suggests, Pennylane – Title Track from their EP, Down on You a sexually driven song that were pretty much getting the girls to line up to get them to do just that, and I can not go on without mentioning their very cool rendition of Died in Your Arms a Cutting Crew track to which they do great justice and will be released in December, just in time for Christmas.
I scored myself an EP to take home and jump around to in my underwear… yes bands like these are not only rare but they make you do things you wouldn’t normally.
After my post-coital like cigarette break, I moved back in to take on Behind Crimson Eyes.
Now I had never heard much of their stuff before today or ever seen the likes of the sacrificial dancing circle that took up most of the room, (apparently it’s where crazy anger fuelled teens run around in circles jerking their arms and legs out in all directions).
But after my cynicism on my part I actually quite enjoyed BCE. The floor shook underneath me from the heavy bass lines and the strong dark and deathly solos ripped through the air like fire. I found myself quite taken by Josh, maybe it was his intriguing expressions and distinctive voice or maybe it was just my thing for singers with passion.
Their new single and title of the tour Shakedown was a little more melodic compared to others like The Game of Life with its intricate harmonic guitar riffs and underlining emotional vocal gimmicks, I have to say that in terms of a song being absolutely incredible this one was the best of the set. The boys also brought the likes of Cherry Blossom Epitaph and Empty Promises to our ears. Which of course in between Josh’s political statements of “sharing the love” in relation both with bottled water and online downloads. BCE were true to their fans coming back on stage for an encore of two extra crowd pleasers.
I wouldn’t say they have turned me but I can definitely now sit down and appreciate a slice of this attitude exposed style of ‘screamo’ every once in a while.
Behind Crimson Eyes have a new album due to be released mid to end of November called Arevelation for Despair. I might just have to pick one up.
