Wednesday the 25th of October saw Soulfly (USA) and Caliban (Germany) play at Fowlers Live. The venue was sold out and the place was packed to its capacity of 500 waiting fans. Caliban were a truly hardcore, metalcore band, their mosh was a flow with arms and legs kicking in windmills and pulling chains style. If this is what you like then this was the band of the night for you. Not very crowd friendly, in my eyes, the band asked the audience to part and ‘pick a side’. Then when the music cranked up again and they hurtled themselves towards each other!! There seemed to be a few chicks getting in to it but it was very male dominated mosh pit. If hardcore scremo, beautiful harmonies and amazing rhythm in the guitars is your thing these guys will rock your world, if not give ‘em a miss. As Calibans set came to and end it became obvious that there was a split of fans, some here for Caliban and others here for Soulfly.
Now the band of the night. Soulfly and that man Max Cavalera that many still associate with Sepultura, was ready to take stage. The main room was packed and it was very hard to get a position up close once they started. The crowd tried to get a chant going but it didn’t last long as Soulfly came out on stage. Cranking out Prophecy they set the crowd on fire. Everyone was in awe as they witnessed Max and his ferocious roar and the mosh was very energetic and jumpy. Soulfly are touring on their new album Dark Ages but they played songs from all previous albums, particularly Prophecy. The songs that got the audience going was Eye for an Eye and Jump the Fuck Up. They played a few Sepultura songs throughout the set including Roots, when the frenzied crowd truly began to peak. Refuse Resist, also by Sepultura, was thrown into the mix as well. There was also a massive drum performance when the band joined together to belt out some beats.
Last time Soulfly came to our shores Max’s son came on stage, as he did this time round. He joined in to sing along to Bleed with the band. Overall it was an energetic gig that left many drenched in other peoples sweat but non the less a smile on their faces!!
